Bouchard Finlayson 2016 Sans Barrique

Wine crush Wednesday: Bouchard Finlayson 4

Bouchard Finlayson has released the 2016 vintage of its popular unwooded Chardonnay, Sans Barrique.

Without the added spice of French Oak, the wine relies on developing its charm from a clean, temperature-controlled fermentation, where the emphasis is placed on developing impressive outspoken, rich fruit flavours.

Grapes originate from a unique vineyard site, located amongst the tall mountains behind the village of Villiersdorp in the Elandskloof valley, Overberg.

The soils are clay-based and non-irrigated, capturing a very special terroir.

With immediate notes of clean, crisp apple and gooseberries, the Sans Barrique further reveals a creamy layer of a convincing yeast personality which enhances the richness of this vintage.

The palate is straightforward and tropical but the finish shows solid mineral qualities ending in a protracted dose of deliciousness, perfectly suited to be enjoyed with sushi, shellfish or fresh summer salads.

The Bouchard Finlayson chardonnay stable includes three other lauded full-bodied wines, namely Kaaimansgat Crocodile’s Lair, Kaaimansgat Limited Edition, as well as the award-winning Missionvale Chardonnay from the estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, showcasing a terroir which has proven to be one of the Cape’s most treasured Chardonnay locations.
