Yet again international style icon David Beckham has curated a collection of essentials for the modern man. H&M’s head designer gives us the lowdown on it.
Modern Essentials Selected by David Beckham are back. Season after season, year in and year out, the football star turned global style icon delivers essential items that enable every man to dress like him.
Last autumn, the ad promoting the collection featured comedian and actor Kevin Hart alongside the main character. That time, Hart was preparing to portray Beckham in an upcoming biopic, and needed to study his behaviour, habits and way to dress. Now the sequel is on its way – and this time Hart takes Beckham on a road trip (or – lures him into the desert).
Modern Essentials features menswear staples from briefs and T-shirts to suits and coats and is developed by H&M’s design team, then handed to David Beckham to select his favourites out of a big range of sketches, making edits and giving feedback.
“I had such a great time putting together the looks for this autumn’s Modern Essentials collection at H&M. I love the new flight jacket, and the sharp double-breasted coat that’s like a fresh update of a true menswear classic,” says David Beckham.
We sat down with H&M’s men’s head of design Andreas Löwenstam to find out a bit more about the collaboration.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIS BECKHAM COLLECTION AND THE PREVIOUS ONES?
“We’ve worked together with David for several years now and I think that fact has become more apparent with every new collection: it keeps getting better each time! Our collaboration is tighter and our confidence in each other is stronger. The clothes prove that.”
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN LOOKING? WHAT HAVE YOU DRAWN INSPIRATION FROM?
“There are a lot of uniform references – obviously – because that’s where menswear essentials stem from. We’ve taken these timeless and classic items and given them modern updates in regards to silhouettes, materials and colour schemes. This time there’s less focus on accent colours and more focus on qualities.”
DAVID’S FAVOURITE ITEMS ARE THE WOOL COAT AND THE FLIGHT JACKET. WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE?
“I love the coat too! It’s double-breasted and has a longer silhouette which is a key look this autumn and winter.”
DO YOU HAVE A DREAM CUSTOMER FOR THIS COLLECTION?
“I hope guys who are interested in uncomplicated yet current fashion check it out. We’ve worked really hard to make sure the fits and qualities are up to that guy’s standards. I hope David Beckham will inspire other men.”
