Spytail Dark Rum: Ginger-ly joins the South African drinks Industry

It was the captivating packaging of the new Spytail Rum that inspired to me to do a location based shoot for the bottle delivery that I received from the team at Truman and Orange, the brand house that is also home to the cask cultivated brews Innis & Gunn.

Spytail Rum is a fairly new product to launch in South Africa, so new in fact when I visited a few niche/bespoke bottle stores and bars they hadn’t heard of this new spiced dark ginger infused Rum. (I quickly passed them a business card and said they should keep an eye out for our post. #SorryNotSorry)

The name Spytail is inspired by the submarines of yester year, maybe a little longer and the bottle’s shape follows with this fable in that the bottle bends to bare resemblance to a Bathysphere*.

*Im not ruing my post with a Googled stock image, imagine an eye ball-seriously, or Google it yourself.

Based on a 19^th Century French tradition of ageing Caribbean Rum with fresh ginger and spices in the barrels, Spytail is distilled in the Caribbean and then aged, spiced and blended at a small family distillery in the Cognac region near the Charente River.

Which is also home to one of the world’s first mechanical submarine “Le Plongeur”  we google it and the word translates “the diver”, don’t say we don’t teach you anything.

The barrels allow a deep amber colour to develop in the rum with a spicy ginger nose and is “sweet” possibly because of the vanilla notes often toasted wooded barrels bring to the wine(Rum in this case) velvety on the palate with a a deliciously long rich finish.

We popped a double tot in a short glass, large ice cubes and a splash of Frankies fiery ginger beer, could also work well with their Cinnamon Cola for a winter tipple. Delish!
