W(oolworths) Cafe Opens in Franschhoek

Whispers of a W Café opening wafted through Franschhoek at the early start of 2017.

Its July 11th and Franschhoek’s very first W Café has been operating for a mere 24 hours.

This marks the fourth new eatery addition in Franschhoek:

Big Dog Cafe an extension and new location for the local Franschhoek Coffee Roastery, TerbodoreLa Petite Colombe which takes over The Tasting room at Le Quartier Francais (part of Leeu Collection) following Chef Margot’s resignation back in April, the soon to open Hussar Grill (owned by Spur Corperation) and now Woolworth’s W Cafe.

Woolworth’s Retail Supermarket is to the Left, a vine covered alley leads to a courtyard with a larger seating area

I’ve walked into a compact café with 6 pine coloured tables that at most can seat 20 people, provided people are willing to share and there isn’t some blady hipster on his Macbook taking up a table that seats three abusing the complimentary Wi-Fi, oh wait there isn’t any “yet”.

I quip, as I sit at said table typing this post; a table set for three.

There’s a blend of blanc and noir in true tradition to the Woolworth’s aesthetic and over head pendants mimic the pine table tops by means of light layered wicker, they encase on trend Edison bulbs.

Guests are welcome to order from the café “noek” just outside for quick take away orders with the usual Short, Tall, Grande offerings for espresso based drinks.

Coffee beans are 100% African and organic making use of farms in both Ethiophia and Tanazania roasted by Tribeca

Breakfast Is served all day and options range from “Free range poached egg pans” to omelettes filled with Smoked Trout ribbons, caper and dill crème fraiche with baby leaves.

To the left of me, an array of Pastries peer over the café. Cakes are crafted in house daily and vary from Carrot Cake to Flourless Chocolate and Almond cake. Prices range from R39-R49 per slice.

For the Farm ”Seasonal Harvest” styled table offering each protein, today; Confit Duck, Chicken espetada and their famous free range rotisserie chicken, are all priced separately and served with three daily sides.

On display today are roasted & spiced Cauliflower, Cabbage, carrot and kale slaw and sweet potato and red onion wheat salad.

Tags on the Harvest table are concise and display “warnings” for those with dietary requirements or allergens with options for vegetarian and vegans too.

There are also sharing platters (served from 11h30) should you wish to share with the table as an option of something light.

We had a delicious lunch today and just as you said, great value and perfect for someone with their laptop. Sat there most of the day, coffee is a little pricey but great cafe vibe. 🙂 <3
