DINNER IN THE SPIER MANOR HOUSE

I recently had the pleasure of attending a five-course dinner at the Spier estate’s recently restored Manor House, which is situated in the heart of the estate and features a beautiful gable dating back to 1822. The dinner, which takes place every Friday evening in March, is an exclusive culinary and creative showcase where Chef Phil Charmicheal presides over an open-hearth kitchen, serving up artfully paired dishes with Spier’s Creative Block, flagship wines.

The Venue

Spier is home to an impressive collection of contemporary South African art, with works from emerging and established artists scattered throughout the estate.

In the Spier Manor House, one artwork by Wim Botha particularly stood out: Mieliepap Pietá.

The sculpture, a mirror image of Michelangelo’s Pietà, immediately draws the audience’s attention. However, the unconventional materials used in its creation become apparent upon closer inspection. The use of resin and mielie meal starkly contrasts Michelangelo’s marble masterpiece.

Botha’s Mieliepap Pietá is a powerful example of how contemporary artists can engage with art history, re-contextualizing iconic works and questioning our beliefs and assumptions. The sculpture’s placement in the contemplation room of the Spier Manor House offers visitors a unique opportunity to reflect on the artwork and its meanings. It is a testament to the power of art to create new conversations and connections across cultures and histories. Whether you are an art lover or simply curious, the Spier Manor House is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in exploring the rich and diverse art scene in South Africa.

The Food

Charmichael is passionate about showcasing exceptional ingredients through minimal intervention and simple, timeless cooking techniques. He uses flame, smoke, and embers to cook dishes, and in addition to the live-fire cooking, he brings in elements of fermentation and nose-to-tail use of meat. His ingredients are sourced from Spier’s pastures and gardens, ranging from grass-fed beef to exquisite seasonal vegetables.

Spier’s Cellar Master Johan Jordaan and expert sommelier Georgio Meletiou have curated the wine pairings, ensuring the utmost thought is given to how food, wine, and space come together. The Manor House hopes to create dialogue and encourage conversations about food security and sustainability, providing a feast for the senses and food for thought.
