Tucked away in a Green Point side street behind a popular delicatessen and espresso bar, Giovanni’s, is where you’ll find Harper’s House.
My home for two nights when I (ad)ventured to explore the city for #FirstThursdays and the opening of chic Blanko restaurant based in Constantia.
First Thursdays, as you may have guessed happen every first, Thursday, of the month and encourages inner city Art galleries, stores, design houses and cultural offerings to stay open until 9pm or later allowing anyone to explore the city on foot and journey the cultural wealth the city has to offer. Very intercontinental wouldn’t you say!
There is no tour, schedule, or guided walk; that is up to you. From bars to breweries, street food to sidewalk bars packed with beautiful people this is definitely an event where culture and creativity collide.
After all the touring, squinting at abstract art I’ll probably never understand, a quick shimmy here and a craft beer or more there, It was comforting to be able to hail a cab and be home safe, at Harpers House in a matter of minutes. (The Cab cost R32 with tip-accommodation that close)
Walking through the up cycled stained glass doors you are greeted by friendly staff (Lucia, the manger, at this point, there are only 3 lovely humans that run this ship) and offered a quick tour of the beautiful home. There are both rooms upstairs and down which Lucia felt I would like the eclectic classic yet contemporary look of room 8. A mix of African wicker, cows hide and lush leather. She must know the gays love a bit of leather!
My Room at Harper’s House, was fitted with a minibar, “Nespresso” style machine, with complimentary pods, snacks, bottled water and a fluffy bathrobe. There was also a stunning lounging area if you wished to avoid the beautiful city just outside your door and read a book too.
I Spent Friday night in bed catching up on work and having an extra length king bed to myself was simply HEAVEN!
Where’s the bathroom you may ask? This facility is shared.
Naturally not for everyone, I didn’t mind this because of the design of the house I felt so at home that this facility or lack of didn’t seem obscure. There are four bathrooms and two “loo” facilities which for my stay never saw me waiting to use the shower (there’s a bath too) in my two days here.
Stocking is the night manager and he ensures that the bathrooms are spotless and caters to you every need-such a gem! Breakfast is not offered, which suited me just fine with the rushed days of restaurant openings and naturally a Cafe Gioniavi’s and a plethora of culinary spots to explore just a street away.
After my trip, Harper’s House has become known to friends as MY house in the city. Perfect for escaping the cold country, you must visit-Mi Casa Su Casa!
