South African breweries are being forced to dump 1000s of Litres of beer

As a result of the Alcohol Ban announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Many craft and microbreweries have been left with no choice but to discard mass amounts of beer and other stock.

In a post titled “6000 litres. 200 kegs. 18000+ bottles.

Darling Brew

A pioneering microbrewery in the slow brew, craft beer revolution announced that they had begun the process of dumping the stock.

A result of no sales, a byproduct of the COVID-19 precautionary measure taken by the government to “curb the pressures on hospitals and the adverse behaviour of South Africans who abuse alcohol.”

In the past 10 years, we have tried everything in our power to make sure #DarlingBrew has as little waste as possible. We’re still dedicated to providing South Africa with premium, natural drinks brewed in a responsible way BUT our achieved goal of becoming Africa’s first Carbon Neutral Brewery feels odd to us right now as yesterday we were sadly left with no choice but to start the process of throwing out our old stock.

The #AlcoholBan has been our toughest blow since we started in 2010 and we’re working hard to adapt and survive!

In 2020, we’ve launched our online #DBshop, opened our #DBDriveThru, released #LockdownLager and rapidly expanded on our #AlcoholFree #DBZero range with #AppleBomb, #MaltCross and more to come.

There are so many South African Craft Breweries currently innovating in the same manner and we implore you all to support your chosen Brewery in anyway you can right now!

South African Breweries To Lose 400 Million Bottles of Beer

In May 2020 when the restriction of Movement of Alcohol was in place along with the Alcohol ban.

South African Breweries were on the verge of having to Dump over 400 Million bottles of beer and RTD beverage until it finally reached Agreement with Government.

The company earlier said that there was a risk of losing 400 million bottles’ worth of beer in current liquid inventory – an estimated 130 million litres. This was because of the SAB’s warehouses at its seven breweries that were now at full capacity at the time and unable to absorb anymore capacity.

If the product could not be moved, the beer and other ready-to-drink beverages would have to be destroyed which would result in an estimated loss of R150 million to the company.
