VUUR Goose Island: A Culinary Adventure on Fire

Nestled on a quaint island on the outskirts of Stellenbosch’s Winelands, VUUR Goose Island emerges as Shaun Scrooby’s latest culinary venture, a testament to the art of open-fire cooking.

This new establishment, an extension of the renowned VUUR restaurant, offers a unique twist to the dining experience, blending the intimacy of fire-cooked meals with the joy of communal dining.

The Evolution of VUUR

VUUR, known for its distinctive approach to cooking solely with fire, has now expanded its horizons with VUUR Goose Island. While retaining the essence of its predecessor, this new venture introduces a social table concept, accommodating 16 to 18 guests around a grand table. For those desiring a more personal experience, the Chef’s Counter offers an exclusive space for two, ensuring an intimate culinary journey.

The Charm of Goose Island

The allure of VUUR Goose Island lies not just in its culinary offerings but also in its enchanting location. Situated on a small island within a dam at Remhoogte Wine Estate, the restaurant is accessible via a picturesque bridge. The island, fondly known as Goose Island due to its history with the estate’s owners, Chris and Rob Boustred, and the Egyptian geese that frequented it, provides a serene backdrop for an unforgettable dining experience.

A Feast of Flames and Flavours

Under Shaun’s leadership, along with the talented Johnathan Veldhuizen and Mandre Campher, VUUR Goose Island continues the tradition of fire cooking. The menu, ever-changing with the seasons, focuses on the finest locally sourced vegetables, fruits, fish, seafood, and meats, all prepared over an open flame. This commitment to quality and freshness ensures that each dish is not just a meal but a celebration of local produce.

The Communal Experience

VUUR Goose Island is more than a restaurant; it’s a communal space where diners are spectators and participants in a culinary odyssey. The experience begins at the Remhoogte Wine Estate tasting room, where guests are welcomed with a glass of wine before embarking on a short walk to the island venue. This journey from the tasting room to the dining table sets the stage for an immersive experience that goes beyond the palate, engaging all senses in a symphony of flavours, stories, and camaraderie.
