Following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address relating to measures of preventing the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) many business entities, as well as national events, have opted to cancel and close in the interest of their staff and clientele. The below list is updated by comments, and information from social media and was correct on the date of publication.
On the 18th of March 2020, a further announcement was made that licenced premises were to close at 18h00 Monday – Saturday and at 13h00 on Sundays. Within these hours the business are prohibited to serve more than 50 people at one time/sitting.

FRANSCHHOEK
TEMPORARILY CLOSED IN FRANSCHHOEK
Some of our hospitality businesses will be closing down for a short while in light of curbing the further spread of COVID-19. Please note that all other hospitality businesses in Franschhoek have been putting extra measures in place to ensure the safety of tourists and staff.
The following hospitality establishments are currently temporarily closed to the public:
- Anthonij Rupert Wyne & L’Ormarins Estates will be closed until 15 April 2020.
- The Tasting Room at Black Elephant Vintners.
- Boschendal Wine Estate will be closed from 1 April to 15 April 2020. Some of their operations will still be functional until then. Please see their policy and more details on their website.
- Colmant Cap Classique & Champagne – only open by appointment.
- Franschhoek Brew Hopper will be closed until further notice.
- Groot Drakenstein Games Club – The Clubhouse will be closed and the swimming pool off limits until further notice.
- Haut Espoir will be closed until further notice.
- Heuwelsig Self-catering Cottages will now only be open for long term rentals for the next two months.
- Hey Joe Brewery will be closed until 28 March 2020.
- La Motte Wine Estate will be closed until 14 April 2020. The offerings temporarily closed include the La Motte Tasting Room, Museum, Farm Shop, Hiking trail and Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant. The Hospitality team will be in touch to reschedule existing bookings.
- Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards will be closed until 14 April 2020.
- Leeu Estates (including Leeu Spa, The Wine Studio and Le chêne) will be closed from 17 March to 2 April 2020.
- Noble Hill and Cosecha Restaurant will be closed until 31 March 2020.
- Plaisir de Merle will be closed to the public until further notice.
- River Cafe Franschhoek will be closed until 30 March 2020.
- Rupert & Rotschild Vignerons will be closed from Monday, 16 March until Wednesday, 25 March 2020. Wines can still be ordered online.
- Stony Brook Vineyards are closed for wine tastings. For sales phone 021 876 2182 and they will arrange the wines for collection. Please note that their self-catering cottages are still open and is a wonderful quiet place to break away from the crowds.
- Val de Vie Restaurants (Polo Club Restaurant, the Valley Restaurant) will be closed until further notice.
- French Connection have closed. (19/3 “We suspect that this will be for at least the next two weeks” as seen on their FB page)
EVENTS / FESTIVALS IN FRANSCHHOEK
The weekly Saturday Franschhoek Village Market held at the NG Church Grounds in Franschhoek will be cancelled for now until further notice.
The Boschendal Friday Night Market has been cancelled until further notice.
Harvest Music and Wine Celebration at Black Elephant Vintners – 28 March 2020 – has been cancelled.
The American Express Winter Sculpture Fair 9 & 10 May 2020 – This event has been postponed. A new date will be made available in due course.
Franschhoek Literary Festival – 15, 16 & 17 May 2020 – This event has been cancelled.
Franschhoek Bastille Festival 11 & 12 July 2020 – This festival will not be cancelled or postponed at this stage. FWV is monitoring the situation carefully. Regular updates will be provided.
