Load Shedding | Stellenbosch Schedule and Info

Updated Load Shedding Schedule for Stellenbosch, July 2022;

Due to lower-than-expected demand on Friday (1 July), Eskom will only have to implement stage 4 of its scheduled stage 6 evening load shedding.

The revised timetable is as follows:

Friday (1 July)

  • Stage 4 load shedding until 22h00
  • Stage 2 load shedding from 22h00 to 00h00

Saturday and Sunday (2 and 3 July)

  • Stage 2 load shedding from 00h00 to 07h00
  • Stage 4 load shedding from 07h00 to 22h00
  • Stage 2 load shedding from 22h00 to 00h00

“Eskom cautions that this small reprieve is due to lower than anticipated demand during the weekend, and continues to evaluate the situation and closely monitor the system. We will communicate and implement any changes as may be necessary,”

On Friday afternoon the power utility said that it has 3,104MW on planned maintenance, with 17,431MW of capacity unavailable due to breakdowns.

Understanding Eskom Load Shedding Stages

Load shedding will be used under emergency conditions for limited periods.

Four schedules have been developed based on the possibility of risk and to ensure that load shedding is applied in a fair and equitable manner:

  • Stage 1 allows for up to 1000 MW of the national load to be shed.
  • Stage 2 allows for up to 2000 MW of the national load to be shed.
  • Stage 3 allows for up to 3000 MW of the national load to be shed.
  • Stage 4 allows for up to 4000 MW of the national load to be shed.

The ESKOM blocks that apply to the Stellenbosch Municipal area are Block 2, Block 8 and Block 16.

Block 2: Stellenbosch Central, University of Stellenbosch, Ida’s Valley, Die Boord, Paradyskloof, CBD and surrounding areas

• Block 8: Cloetesville, De Zalze, Franschhoek, Jamestown, Raithby, Koelenhof, Kylemore, Kayamandi, Vlottenburg, Plankenburg, La Motte, Lanquedoc (Dwarsrivier), Lynedoch and Pniel

The Stellenbosch Municipality will inform residents of load shedding as and when they receive notice from ESKOM. Unfortunately, the nature of the national load shedding currently underway is unpredictable and irregular.

For people living in the major metros, load shedding schedules are available here:

For access to other load shedding schedules, Eskom has made them available on loadshedding.eskom.co.za.

Smartphone users can also download the app EskomSePush to receive push notifications when load shedding is implemented, as well as the times the area you are in will be off.

Stage one rotational load shedding was implemented at 2.15pm on Sunday afternoon and is likely to continue until 10pm on Sunday night “to preserve emergency resources”, state-owned power utility Eskom said.

“Customers are reminded to treat all electrical points as live during load shedding,” Eskom said in a statement.

“Customers are advised to keep checking their load shedding schedules on the Eskom and their municipal website and to plan on the assumption that load shedding will take place.

“We continue to appeal to residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly during this period. Please switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand,” Eskom said.

Eskom customers could find the load shedding schedules on the Eskom website (http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za), or contact the customer contact centre at 0860-037-566.

Customers should note that some municipalities took longer to restore load once load shedding ended. This was to allow for switching off the network in a way that would not damage the power system.

“If customers experience outages for longer periods than announced, please contact your supplier (Eskom or the municipality) as this may be a localised power outage.” Eskom did not provide any further reason for the sudden load shedding.
