Markus Färbinger is an acclaimed baker and the founder of the iconic île de païn café, which is located in Knysna on the Garden Route in South Africa. Färbinger, originally from Austria, brings his expertise and passion for bread to La Motte Artisanal Bakery and Garden Café.
Färbinger’s focus on paying homage to bread is evident in the bakery’s offering of a variety of freshly baked options, including the classics such as sourdough, La Motte’s iconic mosbolletjies and crustique, flatbreads, and the tailormade ‘The Motte’ loaf, which is specific to the estate.
Collaborating with Färbinger on the café’s menu is Chef Chris Erasmus, who was the first chef at La Motte’s Pierneef restaurant. Together, they have created a menu that complements the bread and offers a range of delicious and seasonal dishes.
The range of bread baked at the café forms the basis of the seasonal menu, with dishes such as open sandwiches with ample toppings, classic breakfast items like Eggs Benedict, and local favourites like cinnamon oats and mieliepap.
The lunch menu is equally diverse, ranging from light summer salads to hearty plankie steaks. Sweet treats are also available, with classics such as lemon meringue tart, melkert, and a range of available pastries.
With ample indoor and outdoor seating, La Motte Artisanal Bakery and Garden Café is the perfect place to enjoy the picturesque Franschhoek Valley while indulging in freshly baked bread and other delicious dishes.
The nearby farmyard-inspired playground also makes it an ideal spot for families to enjoy a weekend outing. The café is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 8am to 4pm, with the kitchen closing at 3pm.
Additionally, the new spot plans to launch curated bread and wine tastings in the future, making it a must-visit destination for food and wine lovers alike.
