New to Netflix: January

Netflix Hospitality Hedonist

Here’s a list of what’s new on Netflix, updated regularly and hopefully monthly going forward.

Be sure to check in from time to time to see what’s new on Netflix.

Messiah, 1st January

A new thriller on a Christ-like figure who quickly gains a cult following when he performs what appear to be miracles. Staring True Detective’s Michelle Monaghan and Mehdi Bedhi this spooky series has 30-min episodes so you’ll find it easy to justify burning through more than one episode a night.

Spinning Out, 1st January

Skins’ Kaya Scodelario plays up-and-coming elite skater Kat Baker who is facing early retirement after a disastrous fall. When she’s presented a second chance competing as a duo with resident bad boy Justin (Evan Roderick) she, er, jumps at the chance. But, naturally, it’s not smooth skating and she may end up derailed after all. Look out for Mad Men’s January Jones and Queer Eye’s (and skating super fan) Jonathan Van Ness.

Sex, Explained, 1st January

A very grown-up look at the birds and the bess. Everything from attraction to fantasy, to contraception to fertility. You thought you were clued up but there’s always more to learn…

Cheer, 8th January

From the team behind Last Chance U, Netflix’s documentary series Cheer is a gritty insight into the fierce competition facing the cheerleaders of Navarro College in Corsicana, TX. Led by Monica Aldama, the stakes on the mat are high, but what is more brutal and exceptional than the performances, is the stories of adversity and triumph of the athletes themselves. Over the course of six episodes, viewers will join the Navarro College cheerleaders as they face injuries, sacrifice, personal setbacks and triumphs, all leading up to one nail-biting and adrenaline pumping final competition at the National Championship.

Sex Education, 17th January

The hotly anticipated return of one of 2019’s best series, season 2 shows more armchair (or bathroom) therapy from Otis and we watch with bated breath as his friendship with Maeva develops. Adam is still at military school and has a lot of time to think about last season’s events with Eric. It’s all kicking off over (only) eight episodes so binge or pace it out as necessary.

Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez, 18th January

As a gifted young football player from Bristol, Connecticut, Aaron Hernandez played for a top tier college program before being drafted into the NFL at age 20. But in 2013, fresh off of a newly inked five-year, $40 million contract with the New England Patriots, Hernandez would become a household name for the most infamous murder case involving an American athlete since OJ Simpson. Hernandez’s trials for the brutal killing of Odin Lloyd and two Boston-area men yielded a Pandora’s box of secrets: a tumultuous and often abusive upbringing, a growing fascination with gang life, and other discoveries that painted a maelstrom of motivations behind his violent behavior.

A three-part documentary series featuring exclusive courtroom footage, Hernandez’s phone calls from prison, and interviews with those who knew Hernandez and Lloyd.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, January 19th

The popular dive-bar show is back with its 14th season. Following the lives of five selfish and dysfunctional pals who co-own an Irish pub, the group continue to plot against each other and carry-on with their general hijinks. Nothing like a long-running sit-com.

AJ and The Queen, 10th January

Ru-Paul teams up with Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City) to bring us new comedy series about drag queen Ruby Red who is travelling across the states with a smaller-than-usual companion in the form of AJ, a scrappy and wise-beyond-their-years 11 year old orphan who unknowingly hitched a ride on the tour bus. Expect cameos from your favourite Queens.

Next in Fashion, 29th January

Need a fix of Alexa or Tan? Fashion favourites Alexa Chung and Tan France team up to present a high-stakes competition that sees fashion designers compete to become the next big thing. With prize money of $250,000 and a chance to debut a collection on Net-A-Porter, it’s nail-biting and inspiring and will be serving some serious looks that could shape the future seasons of fashion.

Dunkirk, January 29th

Christopher Nolan’s WW2 epic brings to life the tale of soldiers from Britain, Belgium, and France as they try to evacuate the town of Dunkirk during a battle with German forces. Nail-biting, heroic, and heart-wrenching; you’ve probably already seen it but you’ll inevitably want to watch it again. Starring everyone from Cillian Murphy and Mark Rylance to Harry styles and Tom Hardy.

BoJack Horseman, 31st January

The final season, eight episodes, of the animated adult comedy that has been gaining fans since 2014.
