Veganuary: 5 Places to Eat Vegan in Cape Town

Veganuary officially started in 2014 as a way to encourage, promote, and educate the general public about the benefits of a vegan diet and, since it’s launch, participation in the yearly event has more than doubled each year.

This isn’t all that surprising; in addition to wanting to kick off the new year with a healthy eating goal, climate breakdown is a key factor in more and more people making changes to their diet to help the planet, eat well, and discover creative and interesting ways to cook, without leaning on dairy and meat.

Vegan cooking is an art and for those of us who are used to making meat or dairy the key focus of a meal, is an eye-opening avenue to discover new cooking methods, new ingredients, and your favourite new dishes.

But, if you’re starting out new and in need of some inspiration, visiting a vegan restaurant, or one with a plant-based menu, can be a good way to start the process, see how the pros do it, and get inspired in your own kitchen.

I remember when eating out was such an anxiety provoking ordeal. I was spend way too much analyzing menus, deciding what was “safe” to eat and how it would fit into my macro counting app 😑 So much time and energy 🥱 it took a long to be able to now go anywhere – it required me to push myself to go on “challenge outings” as we called it in the ED clinic 😱 It required me to go traveling and to simply adapt to new eating routines and foreign food 🥥 it’s very freeing to be able to go anywhere with friends and family and to enjoy the social aspects of food 🤗 The emotional component of connecting through eating experiences and being able to be present in those experiences are just as important as the food we eat 🙏 Do you experience any anxiety when eating out? ☝️ During this time of the year, most of us eat out more than usual – it’s ok, the body can handle it and it’s a good opportunity to practice intuitive eating and challenging yourself to get out of your comfort zone! 💚💚
