The Village Idiot : Braai Collab Lunches

The Village Idiot : Braai Collab Lunches 6

I recently joined The Village Idiot and Chef Wesley Robb, a few local foodies and the Village Idiot team who put together a delicious three course plated Gourmet Braai to accompany the sultry Stellenbosch based Dornier wines .

The event is a #BraaiCollab between various chefs, brewers, and beverage producers. This was the 7th event in the series, previous lunches saw Woodstock Brewery, Darling brew beer and Franschhoek’s Foliage all bringing intricate and inventful dishes to our local favorite-the baai.

The menu du jour is available as a two or three course option at R140 for two courses or an additional R 40 for three courses, a steal for what was surprisingly gastronomic for braai bar food (or at least that’s what I expected).

Our Village Idiot Braai Collab menu consisted of :

We started with Jerusalem artichoke, charred onion, mustard panacotta, radish & herb emulsion-absolutely delicious, the table couldn’t recommend this highly enough.

Mains, Pork belly with perfectly rendered fat off the braai and slightly smoked because of the open flames with parsnip puree and pickled granny smith apples.

Finally, my infamous friend, dessert was an ode to chocolate & orange, a classic combination with a few culinary twists which you can see on my Instagram feed here.

Wine maker Philip van Staden hosted the tasting table where diners can taste and order the Dornier range by the glass and the bottle, as well as get cellar door price specials to order for home. The Malbec as you will know from my visit there recently is fantastic. The Pintoage, very light almost Pinot Noir like in mouth feel, was also a table favorite which a lot of the others at the table paired with the braaid belly.
