River Cafe familiar fare in Franschhoek

River Cafe Franschhoek

I’m not sure you could consider yourself a true Capetonian foodie if you hadn’t heard the name or dined at the eatery River Café At Constantia Uitsig.

River Café had long been a popular social haunt in the Constantia Valley and was well known for it’s sumptuous breakfasts, lunches and later opened in the evenings to off dinners.

It was the home of Eat Out award-winning chefs and catapulted some of our personal favourites today.

Think Luke Dale-Roberts of The Test Kitchen and Potluck club to Scot Kirton the protégé at River Café at the time. Now holds the Helm of La Colombe, La Petite Colombe and Foxcroft in Constantia.

Now, almost 4 years later, completely different chefs and 70 km in the opposite direction. River Café of another nature opens in the foodie Town of Franschhoek. River Café is in the space that once was franchise Café “BICCCS”

Here, light wood, woven wicker type lights hang ahead the house-made gelato and locally roasted Terbodore coffee beans, with cappuccinos being well made.

Orchids are sprayed across the room with mosaic tiles at their back and an almost “color by number” palm leaf wallpaper shying away behind glass and black wrought iron.

The River Cafe Menu is as stated, light, familiar – affordable (when compared to other similar eateries in Franschhoek) fare and from what we had enjoyable.

Service is incredibly friendly and efficient.

We ate the Spiced Lamb Pita with Tzatziki and Rare Roast Beef club sandwich with crispy bacon and fried duck egg.

A delicious, simple lunch in a beautifully renovated building, a welcomed edition to fine dining Franschhoek.

BICCCS Franschhoek, the previous occupant of the premises was not a franchise café as stated. It was a direct branch of the BICCCS in Pretoria, under partnership. Owned by Fortunato Mazzone, currently owner chef of Forti Bar and Grill at Times Square in PTA.
